I woke up yesterday and my brain absolutely refused to work.
The best way I can describe this is it’s like those nightmares where you’re trying to run from something but your legs just don’t move.
Except instead of running, I'm trying to think, and every thought feels like I'm slogging through mud.
This would have been disastrous back in my early days of business ownership.
Because back then I had absolutely ZERO coping strategies. I just assumed that if my brain wasn’t cooperating there wasn’t much I could do about it. I’d blame it on my ADHD and then decide to see if the stars aligned the following day enough for me to get some work done.
And when I think about it, the biggest problem I faced back then wasn’t that my brain can be as stubborn as a mule, it was that I assumed I had to wait for optimal conditions in the first place.
Because a business that requires optimal conditions to run, is not a sustainable business.
My friends, I hate to break it to you but if you’re waiting for things to “calm down” or “return to normal” - your business will struggle.
You need a plan that works on all the days, not just the perfect ones.
If you’re nodding along saying “ya April that sounds nice, but I have no idea how to do that”, fear not - I have a solution.
Make a long list of everything you do in a standard week. Then assign each task as either “brain on” or “brain off”. If your brain is truly offline for the day you pull out your list and pivot your efforts to the brain off things.
Sometimes the pure momentum will propel you out of inertia and get the brain back online, but if that doesn’t happen at least the entire day isn’t wasted staring at a screen willing your brain to function.
Oh, and one last thing, be patient with yourself. Running a business isn’t easy. Some days are just harder than others. But over time it gets easier, I promise.
-April
